Are you as cold as I am? I think we’ve got the winter itch. The weather in Atlanta lately has ranged from cold to colder. This season it seems like we get a warm day every now and then when the sun decides to pop its’ shiny face out from behind the clouds and raise our thermometers 10 degrees here and there. Sadly spring has not quite sprung yet though, but we are close! It is only March so we must give Mother Nature her time I suppose. Our temperatures have averaged from 30′s at night to 50′s during the day and strangely recently even colder, soooooo when the opportunity presented itself to visit the sunny skies and beaches of Captiva, Florida after months of sweaters and scarves, we jumped on it! John’s father or “Grandpa G”, as he has been so aptly named, has a condominium there and invited us to join he and his wife Molly or ”Za Za” as Sara says, for a long 5 day weekend in the sand.Captiva is simply gorgeous! Check out the photos if you don’t believe me or if you just need a little mental vacation in your day. Can’t you just feel the warmth? The sun on your face? The sand between your toes? Sorry… got a little carried away there with my little mental vacay but you get the picture. Located near Naples and Sanibel on the Gulf Coast of Florida and a balmy 78 degrees today(yes I regrettably just checked that online) it is similar to being in the Caribbean minus the crowded cruise ship or extended plane flight, which can be loads of fun with a 2 year old. But imagine the water is a beautiful shade of blue green and watching the waves roll onto white sandy beaches as our little one runs around freely with a smile on her face and you can understand why we feel so lucky to have this spot to visit. Everything on Captiva is conveniently located due the fact the island is roughly 12 miles long and 3 wide and the beach is almost always within walking distance. Talk about de-stressing. Sara loved our time there. She had some wonderful bonding experiences with her grandparents as they helped her suit up for the beach with her little sandals and bikini, got to share meals together and let’s not forget the outdoor activities! She is still talking about her golf cart rides with them which I’m pretty sure for a 2 year old is the equivalent of a roller coaster ride at Six Flags, and is still a couple weeks out pushing her stuffed animal friends around on her Dora the Explorer car calling it her golf cart. Pretty darn cute I have to admit especially when her stuffed flamingo rolls off mid lap around the downstairs and needs a band aid…we’re big on boo boo’s right now. Seeing her with them though, hugging and laughing, especially now that she is becoming so verbal, was a gift in and of itself. It’s so neat to see the development of her coordination as she dug in the sand A LOT, or her communication skills as she asked for the things she needed at dinner with a “please”, and even her emotional maturity wanting to holds hands with those around her as we walked. Overall it was a great trip with great company. The two of us got to spend some important time with our little girl and each other as well creating some wonderful memories I hope stay fresh in my mind for a while. These thoughts remind me of how lucky we are to have each other and how important it is to be thankful for them everyday.Recipe of the Week:Who doesn’t love Cookies? Healthy cookies at that! We just started making these 4 Ingredient Peanut Butter Cookies which have been a hit, AND THEY ARE ONLY 36 CALORIES EACH! You will only need peanut butter, honey, baking soda and one egg for this. Combine 1 cup of peanut butter with 1 cup of honey in a bowl. We use 1/2 cup honey to cut down on the sugar intake(a few less cals btw) but they taste so good either way. Then add 1 TSP of Baking Soda and 1 egg to the bowl and mix. Dollop spoonfuls of the cookie dough onto a nonstick cookie sheet or lay tin foil down first like we do and bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes(keep an eye on them near end so they don’t get too brown). There you have it, pretty much the easiest cookies ever and much healthier without all the extra butter and additives. Throw in some shaved coconut, raisins, chocolate chips or other goodies to take them over the top. Enjoy!
As I think Ive mentioned in a previous blog Sara’s imagination has been taking flight at a rapid pace and it is fascinating to see. Pablo Picasso once said that,”Everything you can imagine is real”, and for Sara this is very true to life right now. She has a new doll house upstairs and yesterday she had the whole miniature family dancing “ballet”, as she hummed an uneven 2 year old tune. In the bath last week she told me her wind up puppy was thirsty and then proceeded to take a small cup and pour water on his face haha, then she beamed “All better”.
Of all the toys, she seems to be displaying the most creativity and bond with her stuffed animals. She does refer to them as her friends, as we all do now, and its funny I never pictured myself holding a stuffed flamingo and having a full conversation with him…it…him…see what I mean…in order to have those precious memories with her. As parents we encourage this imagine and creativity as much as possible right now because soon enough it will not be as easy for her to become engulfed by a book about a little mouse or put her stuffed bear, named Bear Bear appropriately, in a chair for a dinner party. She did have a dinner party for her friends the other day by the way, complete with spoons, drinks and her little stuffed fabric cupcakes, it was precious as well as entertaining. Research shows that the evolution of a child’s imagination is imperative for cognitive development and learning how the world works around them. The Wall Street Journal published an article entitled, “The Power of Magical Thinking”, and it does a great job of explaining this very idea. The article says, “In preschool children, for example, those who have imaginary friends are more creative, have greater social understanding and are better at taking the perspective of others, according to Marjorie Taylor, a psychology professor at the University of Oregon and author of the book “Imaginary Companions and the Children Who Create Them.” We are happy she seems to be happy and developing the way she is. Aside from all of the science behind this, sometimes after a long hard day, sitting down with our little girl and having a cup of “tea” with her and violet the stuffed dog, is one of the best things a Daddy or Papa could ask for.

Open Adoption, Where We Live
Hello,
John and Chris here. We’re two dads, raising our daughter, Sara, in Georgia. We love where we live and wanted to continue this blog, in an attempt to paint a picture of our life, as we pursue an open adoption arrangement for the adoption of our second child. We are a loving, happy family of three, and look forward to the day that we can be blessed with a second child.

Thoughts on Parenting
We ran across this poem on the internet the other day, and thought it would be a great way to start blogging again … hope you enjoy:
“When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw you hang my first painting on the refrigerator, and I wanted to paint another one.
When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw you feed a stray cat, and I thought it was good to be kind to animals.
When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw you make my favorite cake for me, and I knew that little things are special things.
When you thought I wasn’t looking, I heard you say a prayer,
and I believed there is a God I could always talk to.
When you thought I wasn’t looking, I felt you kiss me goodnight, and I felt loved.
When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw tears come from your eyes, and I learned that sometimes things hurt, but it’s all right to cry.
When you thought I wasn’t looking, I saw that you cared
and I wanted to be everything that I could be.
When you thought I wasn’t looking, I looked… and wanted to say thanks for all the things I saw when you thought I wasn’t looking.”

John, Chris, Open Adoption, Atlanta
Hello,
John and Chris here,
Above is a photo of the neighborhood we live, work and are raising our daughter, Sara. Sara came to us through the process of open adoption, and we’ve set up this blog to reach out to birthmother’s, if they are considering open adoption, that they may get to know a little about us, as we are ready to open our homes for a brother or sister for Sara.

Children, John, Chris, Dads, Open Adoption, Family Waiting to Adopt
We are in a town near the city of Atlanta, Ga. Decatur is a terrific place to live. It is home to a lot of great, family friendly events, schools, and places of worship. We have a large market that sells fresh produce, all within a short drive or bike ride. It is idyllic, really.
Thank you for stopping by our blog. If you are a birth mother, have any questions for us, give us a call using the toll free phone number, or email,
Warmly,
John and Chris, (and daughter Sara).
Saint Patrick’s Day
Happy St. Patrick’s Day – our neighborhood (Decatur, a small town near the city of Atlanta) is very child friendly. Although the restaurants are very welcoming to children and families, we’re keeping a low profile this weekend.
The city of Atlanta has a lot of events this weekend. There is a half marathon, Atlanta Hawks basketball game – and we’re staying in, with our daughter, Sara. And nothing is better than keeping a low profile and enjoying life with family!
We designed this blog for birth mothers who are considering open adoption. It is our hope, as we type small bits and pieces of our everyday lives, that some of our values and a little bit about who we are as dads, emerge.
Thanks for stopping by,

Living in the South, Raising a Family, Open Adoption

Georgia, John, Chris, Open Adoption, Grand Camellia
Hello all,
John and Chris here,
So, we thought it would be fun to post a little about what it’s like to live in Georgia. Well, in a word: sunny. We have been very fortunate to have been able to travel a little in our lives, and as parents, with our daughter, Sara, we do get to travel, as well. And the striking difference between our hometown of Decatur, Georgia, (which is near Atlanta, Georgia) – is blue sky. Living in the South means we get a lot of sun – and brilliant gardens.
The image above is of a plant called a camellia, and its size just illustrates how we lucky we are to get a lot of sunny, blue sky days. Plants here in Georgia have a lot of opportunity for early blooms, which can last months longer than other areas.
Just one of the benefits of raising a family, while living and working in the South: plenty of opportunity for outside sun time.

Atlanta, the Circus is in town, Family
Hi, John and Chris here,
We’ve been busy being Dads to our daughter, Sara, and working, and keeping a positive attitude, as we move ahead in 2012. The circus is in our neck of the woods these days.
Living so close to a city like Atlanta gives us a terrific opportunity to have access to art, museums, fairs, the circus. “Cavalia” was in town not too long ago (this is a performance with horses, under a big tent) – we actually have very little time, and don’t “do” these shows! But we love that as our family grows, we will be able to ease into these fantastic events.
Here are a few images of what’s going on in our neighborhood, near the city of Atlanta. (Thank you to our friend for forwarding, and to Decatur Metro Blog, for the images).

Facebook, Daughter Sara, our continuing journey to find birthmother
Hello all,
Check out our Facebook page to see some new pics of our beautiful daughter, Sara. Sara came into our lives through the process of open adoption. As we are a family waiting to adopt a second child through the same process of open adoption, with a birth mother, we try and update our Facebook now and again. In blogging we’re trying to reach out to let a birthmother know a little more about who we are as a family and as parents.

Sharing some of our experiences, hopes, on family
Building on the post from yesterday, below is a little quote from the note of the nanny who helped us out while we vacationed. We kept the note because we cherish these thoughts now and in the future, especially as we work and prepare for going through the process of finding a birth mother for the open adoption of our second child.
“Thank you so much for the picture, she is a beautiful child, inside and out. Like I said I usually don’t get so attached, but Sara stole a little piece of my heart”

Sharing thoughts on parenting, raising children, family, open adoption
Hi, John and Chris here,
We’ve been thinking about a trip we took recently, skiing. Sara was with us, and we had a nanny help us out here and there during the trip. Below is a part of a note from the nanny, after our trip concluded, thought we’d share:
“…being a parent is sometimes so hard, you always want to do the best thing for your child, but What IS the best thing we really don’t ever know for sure at the time….And you guys are such great Dads, I see a lot of babys come through here and you two are definitely two of the best parents I’ve seen so far… I wish you both much happiness in your future with Miss Sara.”

30th Annual Storytelling Festival To Be Held this Friday & Saturday, Decatur, Ga.
Family activities in our community ramping up. Decatur, the community where we have decided to raise our adopted daughter, Sara, is a family oriented town, where books, book reading, and storytelling, are valued. How terrific for the children of this neighborhood to have a consistent flow of reading opportunities and celebrations that clearly say, “we value families and reading.”
Story tellers gather, telling stores, for children and adults. This is an all ages event.
We know this weekend’s reading event is the first in a large series of opportunities here in Decatur, Ga, that we as a family can participate in, with joy.

Georgia, Family, Gardening
We’ve had an early bloom of flowers this Spring. That means a little more allergies, but the payoff of living as a family in Georgia is that our winters are mild enough that cold air is never a deterrent to our getting outside.
I tried getting a picture of a dogwood bloom in this blog post, but there’s a problem with the picture, so we’ll work on that and upload later.
We can see our neighbors have early blooms with strawberries. How exciting!
A quick frost is expected in a week or two, and then it’s time to get in the garden. Can’t wait to get our hands full of dirt – looking forward to another beautiful season of gardening in Georgia this year.

John and Chris, Waiting Families to Adopt
The beautiful community we’ve chosen to raise our child, Sara, in, has a very old history. The above picture, from “Vanishing DeKalb” is from 1915. On the far left you can see the tip of our community courthouse, a focal point around which many local festivals and gatherings happen year round today.

Here is the courthouse today. It’s one of the things we like about our community: rich in history, its architectural history reaches back in time and still gives us beauty today.

John and Chris here,
Just read about the extension of sponsorship of Decatur’s (where we work and live as a family) wildly successful, annual book festival. This means that our great community can continue to enjoy, uninterrupted, year after year, (for the next 3 years) the child and family friendly festival. The Decatur Book Festival is a good example of what makes this community so fantastic to raise kids and be a family, together, and we look forward to this and other local festivals, for years to come.

Baby, Waiting Family to Adopt
We have become much more adept at seeing other babies and knowing much better about what age they are because of development milestones. Before, we couldn’t tell you if a baby was 3 months, 6 months, or close to a year old.
We are John and Chris and we are a waiting family to adopt. We are looking for the birthmother for the adoption of our second child. We are a family of three. Sara is our daughter. We adopted her through the process of open adoption. We set up this blog in the hopes of reaching out, letting birth mothers know a little bit about who we are.
Thank you for stopping by. We also have a Facebook page, Youtube Channel, and a website.
Funny things about babies …
Funny things we didn’t know about babies that we now know, as parents … hmmm. Babies are like parrots in that they are great mimickers…they are looking for more new things to gurgle and test out saying. Babies love wooden spoons and Tupperware. Flashy toys are ok but nothing beats a wooden spoon in the mouth and some plastic containers to kick around.
Thanks for visiting our blog, as we continue our search for the birthmother for the adoption of our second child,
Warmly,
John and Chris, and baby Sara

Best Memory this Past Christmas, Family, Birth Mother

Artist: Delilah Smith, Onsted, MI
Hello, This is Chris,
John posted the other day about his take on our “Best Memory This Past Christmas,” and I thought I’d chime in with my thoughts, as well…
Sara’s first Christmas and birthday was special even though she couldn’t appreciate it much yet! Just fun to watch her taking it all in.
In that little mind of hers she’s constantly processing all of the new stuff happening around her! It was also fun to see her dressed up in her red and white Christmas clothes.

Love of Reading Growing Up, John and Chris
Hello, Chris here,
A friend asked us the other day what books John and I really enjoyed as we were growing up, and it got me to thinking: not sure I had a favorite book growing up, but I did like reading mysteries that were geared towards kids.
There was a whole series I read that our school library and local library carried most of. My memories of the mystery books I read while growing up are that the mystery genre kept me entertained and wanting to read more!
We are John and Chris, and we’re blogging now, to support our open adoption search. We are a loving family of three (John, Chris, and our daughter, Sara) – looking to adopt a second child. Open Adoption, John, Favorite Books
Hello,
John here. I’m thinking about favorite books growing up. Both Chris and I know and value the importance of books. To have and be surrounded by books is a gift.
One of the great things about where Chris and Sara and I live is that we have a community that supports independent book sellers. Decatur, the town we’re raising our daughter in, has a BIG, annual book fair, complete with food vendors and lots and lots of children’s activities.
What was my favorite book growing up? William Carlos about the “wild west”. I wonder which books Sara will choose as her favorite, as she grows up.
Sincerely,
John
Parents, Resolutions, Birth Mother
As new parents of our beautiful daughter, Sara – and this being a new year – we’re looking at resolutions. One commitment we have as a family is our search for the birth mother for our adoption of our second child. Keeping home and family and everything balanced, in anticipation of our growing family.
We found an article written for parents and thought it was a good one. It’s about resolutions. What do you think?

Crafting a good story is an art, isn’t it? And one of the things we enjoy as being parents is sharing our past experiences with our daughter. We can weave our lives in the art of storytelling for our daughter, Sara.
As a family, and as we look for the birth mother for the open adoption for our second child, we reflect happily on how much we have, and how many happy times we look forward to in the future, as a growing family.
Warmly,
John and Chris

We found this beautiful image on the internet, and while this little baby is not our Sara, we thought its sentiment, with tribute to her birth mother, lovely. We hope you enjoy, too.

We are not a “stuff” kind of family, but one thing we do enjoy is the comfort of family reading. As we think about all the good things that we’ve been blessed with, with the adoption of our beautiful daughter, Sara, and prepare with open arms the process of finding the birthmother for the adoption of our second child, we look forward to all good things in 2012 and beyond,
Warmly,
John and Chris

Winter John Chris Adopt Atlanta
OK, so the snow we got today was nothing like this picture, but hey, this pic of snowfall in downtown Atlanta is eye catching. We actually had the weekend after Thanksgiving at about 70 degrees – which meant light jackets and plenty of outdoor time for the family.
Since adopting our daughter, Sara, we take these mild, blue sky Nov and Dec days with great joy and ease, just appreciating all the good time we have together, as a family, during the holidays.

Walking Baby, Birthmother, Child Adopt John Chris
We, like so many other families and parents, have enjoyed time with friends and family this Thanksgiving holiday, and loved the time spent with our daughter, Sara.
Our daughter, Sara, is now starting to walk, trying to form words, and generally seems to be a pretty happy and content baby. That makes us, as parents, feel like we are taking our responsibility seriously, and listening to some of the experts on best baby raising practices!

Thinking about our favorite family routine these days, we enjoy the bedtime routine with our daughter Sara… bath time and then bedtime. Fun to watch her playing in the tub. Also, we enjoy seeing her so excited to see us in the morning when she wakes up!

Recipe of the Week: Vegetable Broth, the Classic Family Soup

Preparing Carrots for Soup John Chris Adoption
We are John and Chris, adoptive parents of a beautiful child, Sara. We are parents ready to adopt our second child! If you are a birthmother, we would love to speak with you as you think through this important decision. Please also visit John and Chris Open Adoption page.
What we’ve found as adoptive parents is that food can be a real connecting force with children. With our daughter, Sara, and myself and Chris, we value organic, home made food. It’s an opportunity to sit down as a family, take a deep breath, connect, and continue nurturing our family culture.
Living so close to a wonderful food market, where we can purchase fresh, organic food at very low prices, a quick and easy soup to make is vegetable broth. Serve with favorite bread. Because winter is upon us, you can even warm the bread a little. This dish is a great appetizer, first dish, or small meal.
Vegetable broth as a soup is terrific for family! Here’s one way to prepare the soup:
What you’ll need (we use organic for everything):
Stock pot with lid
Strainer
Fresh, filtered water
Almost 2 pounds carrots
One bunch celery
One onion
Salt and pepper to taste
Chopped parsley
How to prepare:
- Wash everything
- Peel carrots, slice several times so they are long and chunky
- Slice celery lengthwise, then cut stalks several times so they fit into pot
- Discard outer skin of onion and quarter
- Chop parsley a few times so it fits into pot, and if you can throw the stems away, do so, because too many stems taste a bit bitter.
- Throw everything in the pot
- If the vegetables exceed 3/4 of the total space in the pot, consider removing some vegetables, because when you boil, you don’t want the soup to boil over
- Add water until the water line is under the vegetables by about 2 inches. The reason this is important is because if there is too much water, then the soup will taste watery. It is better for the soup to be more concentrated.
- Put the lid on, heat to boiling, then turn the heat down to a soft simmer. Have the lid positioned so a little steam escapes.
- It will take 1.5 to 2 hours for this soup to cook. At about 1.5 hours, you may want to remove the lid altogether, turn the heat up a little. This lets more water evaporate, making a more concentrated veggie soup.
- Add salt and pepper to taste
Strain the soup when serving to young children. Use judgment when serving to toddlers and younger to prevent choking hazards. Whomever you are serving, know allergies beforehand.
That’s it! That is the vegetable broth soup recipe we like to prepare for our family. Maybe you can prepare it for yourself and see how it works for you.

Picture of the Week: Decatur

Decatur Ga - Near Atlanta - Where We Live and are Thriving as a Family
Adjacent to the bustling city of Atlanta is a community called “City of Decatur”. That’s where we have chosen to live, work, and raise our family. The sign – not glamorous – kind of says it all – the city of homes, schools, and places of worship. We’ve found it to be a community that is welcoming, thriving, and a good place to live.

National Adoption Month is now! November is when activities and celebrations happen. This year, there is a focus for families with experience in adoption (our daughter, Sara, was adopted by us through open adoption) “… those of us with a direct connection to adoption can often be the most effective way to promote positive perceptions, debunk the myths …” (source http://national-adoption-month.adoption.com/).

Adoption Quote
Came across this quote the other day. We thought that visitors to our blog may like it, too:
“There is no doubt in my mind that being adopted affects parenting in a profound way. But how it manifests itself is as idiosyncratic as each parent, as unique as each child….We can only do our best to follow our hearts, to watch both ourselves and our children with a compassionate eye, and to find out our own place on the ever-lilting balance beam of parenthood.”

Neighborhood Tradition, Family, Halloween
There’s a tradition in our neighborhood … you open your door and you get “boooed” by someone … a ghost is taped to a bag of candy that says “you’ve just been booed!”
And it’s a guessing game … who is it from?
You then put some candy in the bag, reuse the same note and ghost and quiety/secretly place it right in front of someone else’s front door and it’s passed on and on … meanwhile everyone is asking you, “did you just “boo” me?
Was that You?
Kinda fun

The Great Pumpkin - Happy Halloween!
Halloween is here! We are headed to Chris’ sister’s home for a Halloween party. Sara is too young this year to go out but we did get her a little cow costume.

John and Chris, Autumn Leaves, Open Adoption
What a beautiful time of year in Atlanta. Most leaves are tri-colored, and the smell of crisp, fresh Autumn wafts through the air. Living in the South, we get blue skies most days, and October is no exception. (What a relief from the VERY hot month of August).
Since adopting our first daughter, Sara, through open adoption, and parenting along this fantastic journey, we get to share traditions with friends and family, in a very special way. Table decorations, a few pumpkins out front, sharing time with friends and family.
We’re looking forward to carving pumpkins as a family, and roasting the pumpkin seeds.
Looking to Adopt, John and Chris, & Halloween Season

halloween pumpkin john and chris adopt
Hello,
We are John and Chris, and this is the first week we are embarking on this new blogging journey, as we look to adopt a second child.
Being parents, we’ve had the pleasure of rediscovering our community, Decatur, Ga, with our daughter, Sara. As a family, we are so fortunate to live in an area with good schools, parks, the arts, and more.
Halloween is fast approaching. Pumpkin carving, tissue ghosts, and visiting a few homes of people our child, Sara knows, is a great way to celebrate Autumn, Halloween, the turning colors of the leaves on the trees and the cool weather soon to come.
May your Halloween be safe, simple, happy and memorable.

Decatur, Ga, with Kids, as Parents

Pumpkin Patch Fun for Kids
As parents in the community of Decatur, Ga, one benefit for our family shows up around Halloween time. There are plenty of events to celebrate this Autumn season, including pumpkin patch sales and fun at the local elementary school. We even heard of a benefit a couple of weeks ago, complete with pumpkin patch and hay rides for the kids.
As adoptive parents of a beautiful little girl, and as we work toward growing our family by one through adoption again, this is a good time of year to “just be”, especially in the family oriented community of Decatur, Ga.
Thanks for stopping by our blog,

Parenting, Organic Cooking, Children
Parenting in Decatur Ga is such a pleasure for us, in part, because we have access to a large food market, called the DeKalb Farmer’s Market. One thing we value as parents is eating well, and cooking and providing, healthy, home cooked, organic meals for our child Sara.
Because we are parents ready to adopt our second child, we anticipate and look forward to the day when we set not just 3 place settings at the dinner table, but four – welcoming a brother or sister for our daughter Sara.
Organic Food & Cooking for our Children
A friend of ours, Minde Herbert, has a blog about buying/cooking organics, affordably. This is something we, as parents, value. If you’d like to check out her blog, the address is below. Also, check out some of our other sites we’ve set up, on Facebook and YouTube.
Thanks for stopping by and have a good weekend!
